An IDRC-supported fund in Lebanon has helped 123 Palestinian women obtain a university degree and an escape from poverty.

In Lebanon, many Palestinian families have lived for decades in refugee camps. Their unemployment rate hovers around 40%, and poverty is common.

Argan oil is the most valuable product of the argan tree, a hardy, long-lived, drought-tolerant species that grows only in Morocco. Prized for its light, nutty flavour, the honey-coloured oil is used as salad dressing and cooking oil, and is coveted for its medicinal and cosmetic properties.

It was a policy born of a shining promise — that decentralized governments would help empower tens of millions of women in developing countries. But has shifting more power and resources to the local level really improved women’s lives?

These videos show the results of fieldwork supported by IDRC’s Women’s Rights and Citizenship program, which aimed to learn from women’s experiences of decentralization in Nepal, Pakistan, and India.

Qu’on se le dise : la pipe à eau (ou narguilé, chicha) est aussi dangereuse, sinon plus, que la cigarette. C’est ce qu’a affirmé l’Organisation mondiale de la santé dans un avertissement (en anglais) qu’elle a publié en 2005 et qui a fait les manchettes partout dans le monde. On y affirme que l’usage de la pipe à eau présente bon nombre des mêmes risques pour la santé que la cigarette et peut-être même d’autres risques qui lui sont propres.

The word is out: smoking tobacco through a waterpipe — a narghile or hookah — is as dangerous, or more so than smoking cigarettes. So says the World Health Organization, which issued an advisory in 2005 that made news around the world. It noted that "waterpipe smoking is associated with many of the same risks as cigarette smoking and may in fact involve some unique health risks."

In this first-person account, IDRC Senior Program Officer Angelica Ospina tells the story of meeting Orlando, a remarkable young Peruvian graphic artist on the frontlines of the battle against HIV/AIDS in his country. Angelica met Orlando and other youth activists at a recent workshop in Lima, Peru, where they shared valuable lessons from the Punto J project.
