IDRC’s mission is to support developing-country scientists in conducting applied, community-based research on practical problems. Although these efforts may appear to be value-neutral, in fact, democratic principles inform every aspect of IDRC’s work.

Women, too often the innocent victims of conflict and violence, are just as likely to be the unsung champions of reconstruction and reconciliation. Women play a central role in reuniting shattered families and rebuilding fractured communities, often with little official support. Their plight is symptomatic of the far greater marginalization many women experience in their daily lives. Despite national and international agreements guaranteeing equality, many women are unable to exercise their rights and realize their full potential. Such is the case in Afghanistan.

A new perspective on the links between health and ecosystems

Malaria is thought to have emerged as a virulent disease at the same time as the early practice of agriculture — about 7,000 years ago. Today, a project supported by the International Development Research Centre is taking a new look at the links between agriculture and malaria. The goal is to reduce the incidence of the disease.
