Support to SciDev.Net

IDRC funding for SciDev.Net (SDN), will enhance the not-for profit organization's ability to provide reliable and authoritative information about science and technology in the developing world as it transitions to a self-sustaining business.

The funding will continue to support SDN's service and capacity-building activities, which contribute to alleviating poverty and to sustainable economic development. The goal: advance SDN's organizational and business model to enable it to become less donor-dependent.

IDRC is a founding SDN donor, and has provided funding since 2001. IDRC's 2009 shift to a milestones-based funding model has encouraged SDN to become a self-sustaining business.

In this phase (Phase V), SDN will design and implement a new business unit that will generate income by providing cost-based services, with the support of IDRC's Donor Partnerships Division. SDN's regional nodes will be given greater responsibility and support to strengthen news reporting and developing-country journalists' visibility.

IDRC funding will be used to offer training workshops to science journalists in sub-Saharan Africa and MENA regions. SDN will also develop an Arabic language portal, improve its website, and undertake special coverage of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
