Creating an Arab Council for the Social Sciences

The Arab World currently faces unprecedented socioeconomic and political problems on the domestic front, and serious security challenges on the international front. At the same time, the ability of Arab states to deal with these problems is constrained by lack of strong academic and research capacity to shed light on the region's problems, nurture public debate and inform public policy. There is increasing recognition that the Arab world has to address this "knowledge deficit" to be able to deal with its development, governance and security challenges.

This grant will support the formation of an institutional modality - tentatively entitled the Arab Council for the Social Sciences - for promoting the social sciences in the region. The project will involve a series of commissioned background studies dealing with the legal, institutional, program and financial aspects of the proposed Council; regional consultation including a Web-based discussion; and fundraising and development of a full business plan.
