Building MESRI capacity to fund collaborative research projects in priority areas in Senegal

Since its inception in 2015, the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) has been strengthening the capacities of science granting councils in 15 sub-Saharan African countries to support research and evidence-based policies that will contribute to economic and social development. Specifically, SGCI supports the ability of boards to manage research; formulates and implements policies based on robust indicators in the fields of science, technology, and innovation; supports the transfer of knowledge to the private sector; and establishes networks between the councils and other actors in the scientific community. This multi-donor initiative was jointly funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, IDRC, and South Africa’s National Research Foundation.

The second phase of SGCI, supported by IDRC and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), will provide participating boards with funds to initiate and administer calls for research proposals in partnership with their peers. With this 29-month project, Senegal’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI) will supplement its own resources with IDRC and Sida funding to support six projects, carried out exclusively by researchers from Senegal or in collaboration with researchers from Burkina Faso or South Africa. Research will focus on the priority areas of manufacturing and industrialization and sustainable economies and societies. Funding applicants will be encouraged to collaborate with the private sector, which will have to finance its participation in the projects or provide additional resources to implement the project. All funded projects will account for issues of gender and inclusion and the participation of women scientists and young researchers, as well as vulnerable groups, especially people living with a disability.
