Bridging the Climate Information and Communication Gaps for Effective Adaptation Decisions: An Integrated Climate Information Management System (TTI)

The gaps in knowledge and information between farmers and policymakers, and the communication gaps that may arise as a result, could undermine adaptation to climate change. One way to overcome this problem is by establishing an Integrated Climate Information Management Systems (ICIMS) that can harness both the strengths of local knowledge and advances in modelling techniques in climate sciences. Implemented by the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka, this project aims to improve the effectiveness of decisions of farmers and policymakers/experts by establishing and pilot-testing models of ICIMS that combine the strengths of the decision criteria used by both groups. By increasing the availability and use of appropriate climate information, the project aims to demonstrate interventions that can improve the overall adaptive capacity in Sri Lanka for all stakeholders involved. In addition to developing local capacity, the project will also identify replicable ICIMS models that can be applied in other parts of South Asia and the developing world for the benefit of vulnerable farming communities. This project is funded through IDRC's Think Tank Initiative, which is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.
