TTI Phase 2 Institutional Support: The Institute of Economic Affairs

This funding will help strengthen the Institute of Economic Affairs' (IEA-Kenya) role as a credible public policy institution in Kenya by enhancing its ability to provide high-quality, influential, and policy-relevant research.

About the Institute of Economic Affairs
IEA-Kenya is an independent, non-partisan organization that uses research to inform its policy advocacy work. It undertakes impartial policy research and analysis through a small team of in-house staff and collaborative arrangements with external associates and organizations. IEA-Kenya's research areas include social security, trade and competition policies, globalization, growth, food security, and poverty. It receives its funding from the Think Tank Initiative (TTI).

Support to think tanks
TTI is a multi-donor program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy.

This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions. This will help them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally. For IEA-Kenya, this project will help enhance its research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement.

Better research, improved performance
Through this support over the next 4.5 years, IEA-Kenya is expected to
-initiate and respond to joint research opportunities involving other think tanks as a cost-effective, learning-by-doing approach
-produce quality research using research methods staff have learned through training and mentorship
-improve its management using formal systems and procedures that are monitored and evaluated for effectiveness
-enhance its board's ability to be much more effective in its corporate governance responsibilities
-improve the quality and impact of its research by enhancing technical skills and engaging stakeholders
-establish its reputation as a knowledge producer and advocacy organization

Report

This report presents a summary of the achievements, challenges and experiences of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA-Kenya) during its partnership in the Think Tank Initiative (TTI) for the ten-year period from 2009 to 2019. The TTI enabled scaling up of the capability of internal staff to undertake high quality and relevant policy research in Kenya. Through the provision of financial and other material resources, IEA-Kenya built up its in-house research capacity and has become virtually self-reliant in generating knowledge consequential to understanding and making policy in Kenya. The report provides insight into activities and outcomes of the programme.
