This poster and project brief visually describes the interacting project components working to improve food security of indigenous communities through development of potato cultivars with higher yield and nutritional qualities.
Potato production represents the main economic activity in the Nariño region of Colombia, especially with smallholder farmers.
Participatory research by native farming communities and researchers led to production and selection of three new yellow potato cultivars with higher yield and improved nutritional qualities.
In addition to improved nutritional content, the new potato varieties were found to be resistant to late blight disease, and with a higher yield; farmers incomes show increases of 18%.
