Innovative grants program teams up Canadian and Latin American researchers

Canadian and Latin American researchers are jointly pursuing knowledge in a variety of disciplines, generating ideas and building international networks. For example, in Colombia, researchers from Simon Fraser University and the Centro Internacional de Entrenamiento e Investigaciones Médicas identified ways to prevent dengue transmission. In Cuba, researchers from the University of Ottawa and the Instituto Superior de Tecnologías y Ciencias Aplicadas determined that mercury-tainted fish were a leading cause of health problems.

These are two of 33 projects in 14 countries supported by grants from the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)'s Canada-Latin America and the Caribbean Research Exchange Grants program (LACREG) between 2008-2011. IDRC funds the program. Partnerships for Knowledge describes how LACREG has strengthened existing institutional relationships and has been a catalyst to new pursuits between Canadian institutions and their Latin American and Caribbean counterparts.

The publication includes profiles of the research, instructions for the latest call for proposals, and an overview of LACREG’s role in Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Since its creation in 1995, LACREG has provided 256 grants for joint research initiatives. The research supported examines development in at least one of IDRC's thematic priorities. Learn more by visiting the LACREG webpage.

IDRC also funds AUCC’s Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants (CAREG) program, launched in 2010.
