Creating sustainable environmental management in Senegal's cities

April 28, 2016

The Institut africain de gestion urbaine (IAGU) is an international NGO based in Senegal established in 1987. IAGU specializes in action research, technical support, and information on the urban environment including urban agriculture, solid waste management, strategic environmental planning, and urban risk management. It works with African city administrations to create sustainable, participatory systems for environmental management.

Thanks to its participation in IDRC's Resource Mobilization for Research (RMR) project, IAGU identified and implemented a targeted set of measures to address its priorities.  Focusing on developing a five-year strategic plan, IAGU created a new service delivery unit and training program to generate additional revenue and find new clients. IAGU has since seen its new service unit account for a growing share of its revenues. This small RMR investment helped IAGU explore new revenue streams, with minimal financial risk.
