From War to Politics : Non State Armed Groups in Transition

This project aims to draw out the experience of groups who have made the transition from armed resistance movement to political party, and to make that experience available to others contemplating or engaged in the same move.

The project will be jointly managed by the Berghof Research Center for Constructive Conflict Management and the Berghof Foundation for Peace Support, Berlin, Germany, and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, Cape Town, South Africa. Four case studies will be carried out by local teams, each composed of one researcher and two representatives of non-state armed groups who have made the transition to political parties. Together, the teams will prepare a document comparing and synthesizing the main findings arising from the four case studies.

The outputs and lessons learned will be shared and discussed with two groups currently considering the challenges of transition from military to political strategies.
