Support for Communities affected by Mining in Canada and around the Globe

Founded in 1999, Mining Watch Canada (MWC) is a coalition of 18 Canadian environmental, social justice, church, first nations and labour organizations. MWC addresses the need for a coordinated public interest response to the risks posed by irresponsible mining practices to community interests, public health, water and air quality, and wildlife habitat. Its aims are to ensure that mineral development practices are consistent with the goals of sustainable communities and ecological health; build the skills of communities and organizations faced with mineral development projects; impose appropriate terms and conditions on mining companies; prevent the development of projects that would adversely affect areas of ecological, economic and cultural significance; and advocate for policies to improve the efficiency and reduce the risk of mineral development.

This grant will enable MWC to continue its national and international capacity building, research, dissemination, networking and policy activities during 2009-2010.
