Strengthening Mission 2007 through Demonstration of Social Enterprise Models, Products and Services

India's "Mission 2007 : Every Village Knowledge Centre" is a multistakeholder initiative that is top-down in its approach to technological connectivity but bottom-up in relation to content and knowledge management. A number of telecentre models have evolved over the past decade, one of the most attractive being TARAhaat Information and Marketing Services Ltd, an offshoot of the Society for Development Alternatives (SDA), an Indian nongovernmental organization (NGO). In its approach, TARAhaat strives to attain both social and financial sustainability of telecentres, and has succeeded in various parts of the nation.

This grant will allow SDA

  • to document three models of TARAhaat telecentres as case studies for the benefit of other organizations;
  • to adapt and test two services as a means of strengthening the social and economic viability of telecentres; and
  • to provide advisory services to NGOs interested in operating a telecentre network based on the social enterprise approach.

The idea is to strengthen the participation of NGOs in Mission 2007 and help mainstream telecentres as agents of change in NGO activities.
