Setting the Greater Mekong Subregion - Development Analysis Network's Research Agenda 2012-2014

The Greater Mekong Subregion-Development Analysis Network (GMS-DAN) is a collaborative development research network of leading research institutes and think tanks in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and China's Yunnan province. Established in 1997-98, its primary goal is to foster a greater understanding of development issues and equip its member institutes and researchers with expertise, skills, and knowledge using a peer-to-peer approach.

This project will enable GMS-DAN to set its research agenda for 2012-2014 around the theme of inclusive growth - broad-based, shared growth that alleviates poverty - in the context of regional integration. It will allow GMS-DAN to continue to contribute leadership and expertise to development research in the region.

The funding will support the first stage of a two-stage research program in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation. The objective is to identify the policy changes required to achieve inclusive growth in the GMS and its member countries.

Researchers will assess the state of regional growth and the barriers that hinder greater inclusion and poverty reduction. Their research will evaluate how existing social, policy, and economic structures support or impede inclusive growth both within and between GMS countries.

Each collaborating research institute will publish a country report and the Cambodia Development Research Institute will produce a report synthesizing the findings. The research team will share the findings with policymakers and other stakeholders through consultations, dissemination workshops, and social media.

Based on the work conducted in phase one, researchers will prioritize the most pressing problems and create a roadmap for further research in the planned second stage of the program (2013-14) to produce an evidence base for possible policy responses at the country and regional levels.
