Science and Development Network ( - Phase IV was set up in 2001 as an organization dedicated to providing reliable and authoritative information about science and technology (S&T) for the developing world. SciDev.Net does this primarily through a free-access website, but also by organizing training workshops and other activities in the developing world. Earlier phases were funded under projects 101040, 102165 and 103104. Since inception, has seen a steady growth in the content, use and reputation of its website (, which currently contains more than 10 000 news items, features and opinion pieces related to the role of S&T in developing countries. The website has more than 30 000 registered users, two-thirds of whom are in the developing world.

In 2006-2007, completed an external evaluation that identified several strategic opportunities for development over the next five years, including Website enhancement, regional network strengthening, audience development, and monitoring and evaluation. This grant will support the implementation of's 2008-2012 Strategic Plan. The plan calls for to enhance its website platform, strengthen its language (specifically French) and alternative media content, and build its networking and skills development activity. The last will be accomplished by funding increased coordinator travel and one internship program per year.
