Opening Up Natural Resource Based Industries for Innovation (LAC)

Commodities based on natural resources account for at least half of the exports of two-thirds of the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). There is growing concern, however, that existing natural resource-based industries are environmentally unsustainable and social negligent.

This project is based on the hypothesis that the diffusion of new technologies - information and communication technology (ICT), biotechnology and nanotechnology - combined with increasing pressure to manage natural resources sustainably has created favorable conditions for alternative pathways to development that incorporate economic, social and environmental concerns. Another premise of the project is that a change of pathway in the exploitation of natural resource-based industries requires active policymaking.

The grant will allow researchers to examine emerging pathways to development as evident in the activity of existing innovation funds in Argentina, Brazil and Chile.
