Mitigating the Health Risks of Stone Quarrying and Crushing in India

In Pratapura Industrial Area (Tikamgarh district, Bundelkhand region, Madhya Pradesh), stone quarrying and crushing is carried out by labor-intensive units employing unskilled workers on a seasonal basis complementing the agricultural cycle. In the context of weak regulatory enforcement, worksite health and safety measures are not commensurate with the degree of hazard associated with the industry. Workers are routinely exposed to high levels of dust, silica, noise and heat.

This project aims to improve the working and living conditions of communities involved in stone quarrying and crushing through better ecosystem management. Researchers will engage stakeholders (workers, community leaders, decision-makers, business-owners, policymakers) in the design and implementation of an intervention based on evidence generated from environmental and human health assessments. The intervention will include a strategy for raising health awareness among workers and communities; training health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of occupational diseases, especially those related to pulmonary function; and tracking social, health and environmental outcomes.

This will be the first study to document the effects of occupational hazards on health in the stone quarrying and crushing sector in India. It will therefore provide important baseline evidence for strengthening associated policies and regulations, and their enforcement.
