Measuring Entrepreneurial Activity in the Middle East and North Africa

This project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing the level of entrepreneurial activity in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and benchmark country and regional performance against that of other developing and developed economies.

IDRC will contract a survey company to gather baseline data on entrepreneurial activity in seven countries in the region, with technical assistance on methodological issues from the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association (GERA). A research institute located in the region will be contracted to analyze the data and prepare a report of the results and their policy implications.

The project is expected to provide a strong evidence base to inform policy on entrepreneurship and small and medium enterprise (SME) development. It will also pave the way for a larger regional initiative on SME policy that may be launched within the lifetime of this project.
