Manganese Exposure in the General Population in a Mining District (Mexico) - Phase II
Manganese Exposure in the General Population in a Mining District (Mexico) - Phase II
The first phase of research (100662) explored the dynamics of manganese in the ecosystem and its neurological effects on the adult population. A significant association was found between air exposure and the risk of neuromotor impairment. The project resulted in an ecosystem-based management plan to reduce exposure to manganese in the Molango basin by joint action on the part of communities, government and the mining company.
The objectives of the second phase are linked to specific measures in the management plan. They include an environment surveillance system; an official manganese air quality standard; information on manganese exposure and neurological effects in children; and a community network of environmental health promoters in the Molango basin.
