Job Creation in African Agriculture

This project seeks to enhance opportunities for job creation in African agriculture. Case studies in agriculture African researchers will conduct country case studies to examine the constraints to paid work in innovative agriculture and agro-processing schemes. Researchers will shed light on possible solutions in different political contexts. They will engage with key policy stakeholders to promote research evidence uptake in productive employment schemes in each of the countries. Project leadership The Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) will implement the project. This Pan-African organization seeks to enable African social science researchers to produce and communicate evidence-based research that contributes to African governance and poverty reduction. PASGR will collaborate with the African Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme to complement support from IDRC and the UK Department for International Development. Project activities The project team will -convene a strategic stakeholders' forum in each country to get different interest groups to identify constraints and opportunities in specific commercial agriculture and agro-processing employment schemes -analyze political settlements in agriculture and agro-processing from an economic governance perspective -use different interest groups' informal platforms to discuss how alternative political settlements or coalitions can help provide a win-win scenario -use the study's findings to facilitate policy discussions with governments, donor agencies, and businesses that are interested in promoting productive wage employment schemes in different African political settings -disseminate the findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and other platforms
