Global Administrative Law and Developing Countries

The research network on global administrative law (GAL network) was organized by New York University Law School with IDRC support to improve the ability of developing country scholars, researchers, lawyers, officials, nongovernmental organizations and businesses to understand and influence important developments in global regulatory governance.

This grant will allow the GAL Network to fund a series of research projects by developing country scholars on the following issues: utilities regulation; money laundering; intellectual property and essential medicines; and competition law and institutions. Specifically, the Centre for Policy Research in New Delhi (India) will explore how international institutions influence agencies regulating utilities in developing countries. The Fundação Getulio Vargas Law School in São Paulo (Brazil) will explain how transnational institutions designed to detect and sanction money laundering shape anti-corruption institutions in developing countries. The Los Andes University Law School Bogota (Colombia) will explore how transnational processes have shaped intellectual property norms governing access to medicine in Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. And, the University of Toronto Law School (Canada) will study the performance of domestic competition law institutions in three countries (China, South Africa, Venezuela) and in the European Union (EU).
