Framework Agreement between IISD and IDRC

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) was launched in Winnipeg in 1990, in response to the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Report). IISD has since become one of the premier institutions of its type in the world, contributing to sustainable development by advancing policy recommendations on international trade and investment, economic policy, climate change, measurement and assessment, and natural resources management. IDRC has supported IISD research initiatives - 35 projects with an average annual value of roughly $500 000 over the past decade - that have led to significant advances in the work of both institutions, but also incurred rather high transaction costs. The Framework Agreement will provide core support to IISD for a total of CA $2.5 million over a period of five years. The Framework Agreement is expected to stimulate more effective engagement between all levels of the two institutions; align priorities at a higher-than-project level; develop more effective communication channels; and provide a means for building synergistically on the principles, directions and ideas of both institutions.
