This two-year project aims to inform public policy and debates in Algeria, Iraq, and Sudan on pressing economic, political, and social challenges. In a context of growing protest movements and demands for a more just social contract, it will support developments aimed at transitioning from states of fragility to more resilient and inclusive societies.

In each country, a multi-disciplinary and gender-balanced team of 10-12 social scientists will examine pathways to fostering more sustainable and inclusive structural transformation and mechanisms for strengthening accountability and transparency and improved state-business relations. The teams will use a combination of research approaches, including the use of existing databases, political economy analyses, and identifying options to shape the future. They will engage with and assist policymakers in the process of designing and implementing inclusive public policies and policy reforms.

The project will be managed by the Economic Research Forum, a prominent regional network of Arab researchers focusing on economic analysis with increasing attention to multi-disciplinary research, gender research frameworks, and understanding the implications of climate change. The Forum has a strong reputation of addressing the region’s political and economic challenges, making micro-data more open and accessible to the public, investing in a younger generation of researchers, and establishing platforms for systematic policy dialogues based on evidence and knowledge.
