Enhancing the Action Research Capacity of the International Model Forest Network

The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) dates from a commitment made by Canada at the UNCED (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development) Rio Conference in 1992 to create an international network of working models of sustainable forest management that are based on local-level partnerships. The network has subsequently grown to include more than 40 sites across 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Russia, and has considerable growth potential.

After 12 years of being housed at IDRC, the IMFN Secretariat has moved to a new host organization, the Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan-CFS).

This project will continue IDRC's commitment to and involvement in the IMFN by supporting IMFN operating expenses, governance bodies, committee work, grants to individual model forests, communications and outreach, knowledge management, and strategic initiatives. It is expected that by the end of the project, the IMFNS and the Canadian Model Forest Network (CMFN) will have successfully established appropriate governance and network support structures; adopted an assessment framework, norms and terms of reference for participating in the network; and secured broad-based international support for the initiative. At site, regional and global levels, the project will continue to register impacts in important areas such as governance, capacity building, conflict mitigation, poverty alleviation, management practices, conservation and protection, and sharing knowledge to accelerate innovation.
