Ecohealth in Focus Cities - Lima, Peru

In Lima, Peru, solid waste management is an informal activity involving poor communities working under difficult conditions. Yet, experience in developed countries has shown that with increased consumption of disposable material, and in the context of appropriate political, economic and working conditions, solid waste management can be both healthy and profitable.

This project will support the implementation of a new sorting plant for solid waste collection and other activities to reduce worker and environmental vulnerability, including a health education program. Researchers will carry out an occupation and environmental risk assessment, devise and evaluate risk mitigation strategies, and share the findings with decision-makers, the local community and the scientific community.
