In Bahir Dar, the capital of Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia, residents of this city of close to 200,000 people grow different vegetable crops in a way that makes good use of scarce materials. Used containers are filled with soils excavated from construction sites and augmented with natural fertilizers like cow dung. This system has increased residents’ vegetable consumption significantly, and is in common use in the area.
