Abstract

A White Paper on the State of International Development Studies, published in 2003 by the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID) and the North-South Institute (NSI), noted that although international development studies (IDS) is one of the fastest growing academic areas in Canada, the country still lacks an interdisciplinary doctoral program in the subject. Saint Mary's University, Halifax, is home to Canada's first master's program in IDS and has cooperated in this area with the Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas (UAZ), Mexico, which recently launched its own doctoral program in IDS. This grant will support ongoing cooperation between the two universities by funding a series of visits, exchanges, research internships and workshops to be carried out in Canada and in Mexico between November 2005 and November 2006. The objective is threefold: to establish an affiliated, and eventually joint, academic program leading to a doctoral degree in IDS; to strengthen the doctoral program offered by the Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas through the addition of a new specialty area of research, that of regional and local development; and to assess alternative strategies for instituting an inter-university doctoral program in IDS in Canada.
