Abstract
The member countries of the Network for Health Systems and Services Research in the Southern Cone (Rede) have considerably segmented and fragmented systems of healthcare provision. This study will provide an overview of primary health care (PHC) in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, and a more in-depth assessment of PHC within the health systems of two countries (Argentina and Uruguay). Researchers will undertake a literature review, documentary analysis, key informant interviews, focal group discussions with leading stakeholders, and surveys of PHC users and professionals. The idea is to identify opportunities for and limits to using PHC as a strategy to achieve more integrated and universal health care.
