IDRC supports national education efforts by developing means of applying information and communication technologies (ICTs) to redress inequities in access to education. For example:
- Projects have provided refurbished computers and training to Colombian and Kenyan classrooms (read more: Computers Live On In Colombian Classrooms and Computers for Schools Kenya).
- IDRC's Acacia program has supported such projects as SchoolNet in both South Africa and Mozambique -- nationwide networks that enhance learning opportunities for students, teachers, and the surrounding community via the Internet (read more: http://www.schoolnetafrica.net/279.0.html).
- Studies of exemplary Schoolnets are now underway in seven Latin American countries to identify best practices and success factors to assist decision-makers integrate ICTs in education throughout the region.
- In Africa, IDRC is supporting the integration of ICTs into the basic curriculum of primary schools in Senegal, particularly for mathematics and reading/writing. The model being developed will gradually be extended to the entire educational system (read more: Integration of ICTs into the Basic Curriculum in Primary Schools in Sénégal).
Many projects also focus on the use of ICTs to deliver distance education to both teachers and students (read more: ACACIA). And because the lack of content in local languages is a major impediment, students in Laos are developing content in the Lao language as part of their homework, thus helping to bring the benefits of ICTs to their elders while learning themselves (read more: Laos: A Final Frontier for ICTs).
