Abstract
Established in 2004, the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) is a consortium of 15 policy research centres from the Arab world working to mobilize Arab research capacity to promote a home-grown program of democratic reform. To date, there has been little or no discussion in the Arab world of how to promote good governance, transparency and accountability in the security sector. This grant will allow ARI to shed light on one of the most neglected aspects democratization, that of security sector reform. There has been little or no discussion in the Arab world of how to promote good governance, transparency and accountability in the security sector. ARI will examine the security sector in eight countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia) and draw up an agenda for reform that is based on an insider understanding of the issues. The Initiative will also foster informed discussion of security sector reform at the domestic level, and prepare the ground for future work in this area by other groups (academics, researchers, activists) within Arab society.
