The Kababaihan Iisa ang Layunin Umunlad ang Sambayan (K.I.L.U.S.) Foundation, a multi-purpose environmental cooperative in Pasig City, Philippines, developed a creatively smart way of recycling discarded plastic “doy” packs of fruit juices. By making bags, slippers, containers and many other remarkable products from these waste materials, the foundation was able to provide livelihoods to at least 200 families, while helping to create a cleaner environment. Every day, an average of one tonne of these non-biodegradable plastics are cleaned, woven and sewn into a wide array of reusable products that find their way to 12 countries in Europe, North America, and Asia. The brainchild of local community chairman Mr. Andy Santiago, the program has won numerous awards and citations. In its five years of existence, it has empowered community members and served as a model for others to follow.
