Pride glows in the face of this young intern with FoodShare, a Canadian not-for-profit based in Toronto. The healthy harvest of organic carrots she holds in her hand were plucked from FoodShare’s Sunshine Garden, a 6 000 square foot organic market garden in the city core that provides meaningful employment for urban youth and for patients at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The certified organic produce is grown and sold at the twice weekly in-the-garden farm stand, attracting a loyal and growing clientele eager for the very freshest and finest organic produce in Toronto.
The success of FoodShare’s Urban Agriculture Program and the Sunshine Garden proves that urban agriculture is very viable and has an important role to play in food security for the 21st century.
