Recognizing the importance of HIV/AIDS as a development issue, Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) was one of the first international donor agencies to allocate resources to research on the prevalence and means of transmission of HIV, as well as to community intervention through prevention and knowledge about its transmission. The Centre supported its first research project in 1987 and in 1989 undertook one of the first large-scale field studies to determine the prevalence of AIDS in West Africa.
