  • At least 1 billion people – mainly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America – live in slums and informal squatter settlements. By 2020 that figure could double.
  • People living in slums often do not have access to safe water or adequate sanitation and are faced with poor air quality.
  • It is estimated that 1.3 million children in developing countries die from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and inadequate sanitation every year.
  • One of the Millennium Development Goals aims to significantly improve the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2020.
