  • Forty women were elected heads of state or heads of government between 1953 and 2006. 
  • Of the 185 highest-ranking diplomats to the United Nations, only seven are women. 
  • Between 1945 and 1995 the percentage of women members of parliament (MPs) worldwide increased four-fold. 
  • Rwanda now has the world’s highest proportion of female MPs. Following elections in October 2003, nearly half of the country’s MPs are women.
