News 126 of 193
IDRC was saddened to learn of the death of Ferdinand Bonn on 29 August 2006 from injuries he sustained in a car accident the week prior while on mission in Morocco.
The 63-year-old father of three was an IDRC partner who taught at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec. He founded the University’s remote sensing laboratory and the Centre of Research and Applications in Remote Sensing (CARTEL).
Dr Bonn’s work in the fields of the Environment and Remote Sensing was recognized throughout the world, especially in Asia and West Africa.
Dr Bonn’s association with IDRC began in 1986 with a project in the Dominican Republic and continued by others in Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, and Viet Nam.
He received a Friendship Medal from the Government of Viet Nam in 1988 in recognition of his role in the development of information systems to monitor the country’s flood-prone Red River Delta. Dr Bonn was only the second Canadian to receive the medal, which is Viet Nam’s highest honour given to foreigners.
