Commencement Date: 2002
End Date: 2004

The general objective of this research network was to contribute with institutional strengthening and development of the artisan and small-scale miners as social players.

Ekamolle was the institution in charge of regional coordination.

The research network project also included national studies in Bolivia (Cumbre del Sajama S.A.), Brazil (CETEM in collaboration with NAEA), Colombia (XIJMA Ltda. and INER/Universidad de Antioquia), Ecuador (Fundación Natura) and Peru (Ekamolle).

Specific objectives:

  • To characterize different forms of organization of ASM in selected countries with emphasis in social, cultural, labour and political (organizational) aspects
  • To identify the strengths and weaknesses of ASM organizations
  • To analyze the authority and power mechanism, decision making processes and forms to deal with internal conflicts
  • To identify and analyze the ASM organization relationships with other stakeholders, including government, mining and commercial companies, and civil society organizations, with emphasis on the local level
  • To analyze the national legal framework influence on types and proceses of existing organizations
  • To make recommendations to adapt and produce public policies adjusted to different ASM organizational cultures, with the aim of facilitating the institutional strengthening of their organization
  • To elaborate guidelines for institutional strengthening, including training
  • To build and test a matrix of variables, which is expected to be useful to monitor institutional strengthening processes of ASM organizations
  • To contribute with the formation of a Latin-American small-scale mining organizations network.
