Passive verbs are not wrong!

Passive verbs can provide a more objective or diplomatic tone in your writing.

You may wish to use them if:

  • you don't want to 'appear' personally in your document;
  • you don't know who or what did something;
  • you would rather not admit who was responsible for an action.

Don't feel that you must be rigidly consistent in your use of passive or active verbs. There is nothing wrong with using both.

Be guided by what you want to say. Use the verb that expresses your meaning most clearly. Be aware that too many passive verbs will tend to make your writing dull and lifeless.

As a general guideline, use fewer passive verbs and more active ones.
