Low-cost energy solutions for water supply in drought-prone Southern Africa

This report from the University of Cape Town’s Energy Research Centre examines how renewable energy and energy mini-grids can power water services in drought-prone rural areas in five Southern African countries: Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Lesotho, and Mozambique.

Researchers identified three main challenges to the uptake of solutions: a lack of coordination in water and energy policies, poor knowledge of small-scale renewable energy projects, and the consistent failure of large donor-funded initiatives to benefit small farmers.

The study highlights the need for more in-depth research to inform infrastructure planning.

This is one of four reports produced by the IDRC-funded project Clean Energy and Water: An Assessment of Services for Local Adaptation to Climate Change. The project analyzes how water and renewable energy services can be combined to enhance the resilience of resource-constrained communities to climate variability.
