What we fund

We support research that strengthens how developing-country universities, industry, and governments interact and share innovation knowledge. We provide funding to developing-country researchers who:
  • improve the capabilities of key players in innovation systems, such as governments, industry, and educators
  • develop innovation and science policy that reflect the needs of developing countries
  • analyze how innovation is developed and implemented
  • increase knowledge about the impact of new technology on society and the economy
Our research areas

The program focuses on three related themes, which interact to help developing countries more effectively develop their innovation systems and harness science and technology.
  • Innovation system actors

We support research that examines how the interaction of people and ideas creates an environment for innovation. Funded activities include regional and international networks, as well as stand-alone studies. We support research that investigates barriers to innovation networks, learning strategies, and policy interventions. Research also addresses the role of key innovation system actors, such as universities, research institutes, science academies, NGOs, financial institutions, and the private sector.

  •  Science and technology policies
We fund research that investigates how science and technology policies evolve and improve developing-country innovation systems. Research includes stand-alone project grants and support for network studies. We also support reviews of the laws and economic measures used in science policy. Our goal? To generate knowledge that will highlight the importance of strong science and technology capabilities to political and civil leaders.
  • Impacts and inclusion
We support research that examines the socio-economic impacts of technology and innovation on rural and urban communities. Research under this theme also addresses how institutional, economic, and social objectives can be included in policy. We also support studies that improve understanding of ethical considerations, regulation, and governance in science and technology policy.
