Why we do what we do

Since its inception, IDRC has supported research on science, technology, and innovation that contributes to economic growth and alleviates poverty in developing countries. This includes funding research that seeks to:
  • identify and better understand the key players in science and technology policy
  • supports technology networks
  • develops new innovation strategies
  • defines how new technology impacts society
We focus on the key themes of agricultural innovation, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and creative industries, with energy as an emerging area.

The research and related activities we support achieve three objectives:
  • to improve knowledge, research capacity, and linkages between science innovation players in developing countries
  • to address science and technology policies that improve how governments, universities, industry, and other innovation actors interact
  • to increase analysis of technology’s impact, support innovation and scientific learning capability, and help inform policy-making
