Why we do what we do

Tackling global issues requires a collaborative effort. Building international teams that unite individuals with scientific expertise and knowledge of local contexts is needed for science to address numerous societal and technological changes.

Established in 2005, IDRC’s Challenge Fund acts as a catalyst to create new research consortia. We respond to the growing interest in collaborative and comparative international research. We support international teams by creating partnerships with research granting councils in Canada and internationally. Together, we support large-scale competitions that seek to address global challenges in the following areas:
  • agriculture and the environment
  • health and health systems
  • social and economic policy
  • science, technology, and innovation
