Why we do what we do

Around the world, IDRC-supported researchers address the most pressing issues facing developing countries. With funding from IDRC awards, they can pursue critical research that will contribute to progress.

Since 1971, IDRC has supported more than 4,000 students pursuing education or research opportunities throughout the developing world. For the past three years, we’ve increased our support for Canadian and developing-country scholars.

Our awardees sharpen their skills as researchers and journalists, and investigate a variety of research issues, such as agriculture, forestry, economic policy, the environment, and governance.

In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, we do not support awards that involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia.
