Informing environmental policy through economics

As developing countries face mounting environmental problems, one fact is certain: economic analysis can help overcome them.

IDRC’s Environmental Economics program aims to equip developing countries with the capacity to understand the economic issues that underpin environmental problems, and identify solutions. We work to ensure that researchers have the tools and knowledge they need to provide sound advice to policymakers.

We believe economic analysis can play a critical role in breaking through the financial barriers that prevent countries from addressing environmental issues. The most effective analyses are both problem- and site-specific. They’re also best carried out by experts who know the local situation.

Unfortunately, the number of local analysts with the training and experience to undertake this work is small. We want to change that.
